Latinos in Northern Virginia are mourning today along with a prominent local advocate--Catholic priest José E. Hoyos. Hoyos, director of the Arlington Diocese's Spanish Apostolate, found out yesterday that his brother was among 11 civilian hostages killed earlier this month in Colombia, his office said.
The deaths of Jairo Hoyos Salcedo and 10 others--all lawmakers--were announced yesterday by Colombian President Alvaro Uribe, who blamed the country's largest rebel group. The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, which seized the politicians in 2002, said in a statement earlier in the day that the politicians had died on June 18 when "an unidentified military group" attacked the jungle camp where they were being held.
Hundreds are expected to come out to support Hoyos on Monday, when a memorial Mass will be held at 8 p.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Parish in Falls Church. The church, where Hoyos was a vicar, was picked because it was the largest in the area, diocese officials said.
A well-known advocate for Latino immigrants, Father Hoyos appears often in the Spanish-language media in this area and in El Salvador in particular, where he has focused a good part of his ministry.
Bishop Mourns Death of Jairo Hoyos Salcedo
June 29, 2007 - Arlington Bishop Paul S. Loverde released the following statement on the killing earlier this week of Jairo Hoyos Salcedo, brother of Fr. Jose Eugenio Hoyos, Director of the Arlington Diocese’s Spanish Apostolate:
“Our prayers and hearts are with the entire Hoyos family as they mourn the untimely death of their son, brother, and father, Jairo Hoyos Salcedo. I join my prayers to so many in the wake of such a tragic loss of life.”
Salcedo was among the 11 civilians — all lawmakers from the Valle del Cauca state, abducted in 2002 by the FARC revolutionary forces — who died earlier this week in Colombia. He is survived by his wife, Carmen, and three children, Diego, John and Efrain.
A Memorial Mass for Jairo Hoyos Salcedo will be held:

La muerte de los once diputados colombianos secuestrados por las FARC en Colombia también golpeó a la comunidad en el área metrpolitana de Washington, DC, en la persona de una de sus personalidades más respetadas, el padre Eugenio Hoyos, director del Apostolado Hispano de la Diócesis de Arlington, Virginia.
Su hermano, Jairo, fue una de las víctimas de esta masacre. Jairo llevaba cinco años secuestrado por la mencionada guerrilla.
Jairo Hoyos, hermano mayor del sacerdote, fue uno de los doce diputados de la Asamblea del departamento del Valle del Cauca de Colombia secuestrados en abríl de 2002.
La madrugada del jueves 28, el padre Hoyos recibió la infausta noticia de la muerte de su hermano.
Con el dolor a cuestas, sin embargo, dijo que no guarda odio ni rencor para los culpables. Al mismo tiempo, anunció que a través de una fundación trabajará "por la liberación de todos los demás secuestrados."
"Mi hermano estuvo físicamente secuestrado, pero el resto de su familia también lo hemos estado durante mucho tiempo de una manera figurada sin poder salir en la calle ni decir lo que pensábamos", dijo recientemente Hoyos.
"Durante mucho tiempo, añadió, nos cohibimos por miedo a que nuestras acciones tuvieran repercusiones en el bienestar de mi hermano, pero a partir de ahora vamos a redoblar los esfuerzos y a sacrificar lo que sea necesario, porque es injusto que nos callemos."
